Product Description Cows that type? Impossible! These word-loving cows turn Farmer Brown's world upside down in a hilarious tale about barnyard rebels who take a stand for better working conditions. The story begins with the cows finding an old typewriter: "Dear Farmer Brown, The barn is very cold at night. We'd like some electric blankets. Sincerely, The Cows. When Farmer Brown fails to comply, he finds another note on the barn door: "Sorry. We're closed. No milk today." Finally, the cows and the farmer come to terms with the help of an impartial party -- the duck. But, little does this poor farmer know that ducks can type, too!
Amazon.com Review The literacy rate in Farmer Brown's barn goes up considerably once his cows find an old typewriter and begin typing. To the harassed farmer's dismay, his communicative cows quickly become contentious: Dear Farmer Brown, The barn is very cold at night. We'd like some electric blankets. Sincerely, The Cows When he refuses to comply with their demands, the cows take action. Farmer Brown finds another note on the barn door: "Sorry. We're closed. No milk today." Soon the striking cows and Farmer Brown are forced to reach a mutually agreeable compromise, with the help of an impartial party--the duck. But this poor, beleaguered farmer's "atypical" troubles are not over yet! This hilarious tale will give young rebels-in-the-making a taste of the power of peaceful protest and the satisfaction of cooperative give and take. Witty watercolors by award-winning illustrator Betsy Lewin (Snake Alley Band, Araminta's Paint Box) will make this a favorite for one and all, even if words such as "ultimatum" and "neutral" throw the younger set. | Customer Reviews: OK July 1, 2010 Anonymous The story is cute but I am not sure about teaching my kid negotiation, strike and civil disobedience skills.
Funny and Has Great Themes! June 17, 2010 Robin Bivona I am a first grade teacher and was able to use this book in many different ways. The students understood that cows can not type and actually understood the humor. I used the letters in the story to show how to write a letter and ask for something. With older students there is the theme of bartering and scarcity. I found MANY great ideas as an educator for the use of this book. It is great!
Amazing April 25, 2010 George Daniel I bought this as a gag gift for my little sister that was turning 14. I ended up keeping the gift for myself. There isn't much educational value as far as the book is concerned, but it's definitely something that you can read in less than five minutes, but will have you thinking about it for days. I still occasionally laugh when the book comes to mind. Highly recommended.
You will laugh April 22, 2010 C. Brackett (Littleton, CO USA) This book is fun to read for my son and I. We giggle along as the cows type away. I'd recommend for any child.
Original and Fun March 17, 2010 Whatcha Reading Now? (Florida, USA) "Cows that type, hens on strike? Impossible!" Well, not for Farmer Brown. And what makes matters worse, they're handing out demands. Electric Blankets. The cows and chickens want electric blankets because, you know, the barn is cold at night.
This hilarious tale is a "battle of the wits" between unsuspecting Farmer Brown, and his livestock. As usual, Doreen Cronin delivers in originality, creativity and sheer fun, in this story about a group of animals, who just want to be, um...herd.
