4 out of 5 stars Western Saddles - Relatively Pain Free   June 15, 2009

I purchased this DVD with the goal to better understand saddle fit and position on the horse's back. Joyce Harman has done a fine job of filling the gap in this rider's knowledge about saddle fit. She exposes the myth of "saddle pads" fix the problem and goes beyond the "sweat" pattern. While not the most dynamic speaker, she walks through fit of the tree, fit of the saddle, fit of the saddle with a pad, and with a rider. how to judge a saddle before putting it on to check for broken or asymmetrical trees.

This is a great start for beginners and experienced riders alike. I also recommend that you buy The Western Horse's Pain-Free Back and Saddle-Fit Book: Soundness and Comfort with Back Analysis and Correct Use of Saddles and Pads to go with it as it contains much more information than the DVD.

She also has the English Saddles: How to Fit: Pain-Free and The Horse's Pain-Free Back and Saddle-Fit Book for English riders.

Like the other reviewers, I did think this was a helpful dvd. Despite riding English, western, and driving over many years, I haven't come across much detailed information on saddle fitting, so this dvd definitely increased my knowledge and confirmed my ideas of what "looked right." However, I bought the dvd because I have a difficult to fit, flat backed 13 hand, Welsh/paint pony to buy saddle for, and I was hoping for more information on bars -- regular, semi quarter, and quarter -- or even on halflinger trees (though I know that is expecting a bit much).

4 out of 5 stars Informative DVD   February 19, 2007

The DVD can be a good foundation to have when starting to explore the "saddle djungle". If you are going to buy a used saddle then it is recommended to see this DVD first.

The thing that I am missing are even more examples of badly and correctly fitting saddles on different horses.

Saddle fit is one the most important aspecets of horse ownership. Here on one well-done dvd are answers that you may not find in other saddle fit references. If you're shopping for a new or used saddle, don't disregard proper saddle fit. Dr. Harman's dvd should be on your shelf!

Maybe I was expecting too much, but I felt although the elements of a correctly fitting saddle were discussed, there was not enough demonstration on exactly how to tell whether the saddle was a correct fit or not. In other words, the actual nuts and bolts (HOW does it feel, how much is too much, or not enough?) of the discussion were not adequately demonstrated. This is unfortunate, because the information presented was very good.
